Have you ever been wounded emotionally by a lie that someone told about you?
Have you ever been hurt as the result of believing something for years that you thought was true, only to find out later on that it was a lie?
There are evil spirits which are alive and well on planet earth today. They are roaming about daily, (1 Pet. 5:8) whispering lies in people’s ears for the purpose of undermining the truth of God’s word that gets sown in our hearts. If these spirits succeed often enough, we as Christians will never experience victory or enjoy our lives.
In times past, when one faction wanted to confuse or deceive their enemy during times of war, they would circulate propaganda through different means in hopes of gaining an advantage so that they could ultimately destroy them.
Webster’s Dictionary says that propaganda is: information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to harm a person, group, movement, institution, or nation.
This is exactly what your arch enemy, satan, hopes to do to you. And if you don’t know God’s word, it’s much easier for him to accomplish this task of distraction, deception and finally destruction.
The reason we must know God’s word is because satan also knows God’s word…very well!
As a matter of fact, he used several scriptures when he was tempting Jesus in the wilderness (Mt. 4:1-7, Lu. 4:1-12). But remember this; every time he used scripture, it was twisted out of context for his own evil, selfish motive.
Do You Know Who You Are?
If you’ve been a Christian for a while, hopefully you know what God says about your identity—who you are in Christ. In Romans and Galatians, the apostle Paul said that we have been crucified with Christ and raised to new life in Him. In Second Corinthians 5: 17-21, it says that if we’re in Christ we are a new creation and that Jesus became sin for us so that we might become the righteous of God. Now that’s a HUGE deal.
As Christian people we should always be growing in our understanding of God’s word. That simply means that while all of God’s word is true, there are some truths that are greater than other truths. In other words, there are multiple layers of truth that can only be revealed by the Holy Spirit.
It is my conviction that one of the most important truths in the bible is to know our identity in Christ and that’s what I want to focus on in this post.
We “Really” are Dead!
Recently, I was having a particular struggle with an issue that I “know” Jesus had previously given me victory over. But it was really starting to defeat me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and I even found myself getting into fear over it—like I couldn’t win anymore.
Then the Lord brought to my mind a message that I’d heard a few months ago titled: Really Saved. It was taken from Romans 6:3-11 where the apostle Paul is describing what happened on the cross with Jesus and how we really were crucified with Christ, and that our old sin nature was totally, completely done away with…eradicated forever!
It’s not still heaving on the cross, gasping for breath and waiting for the opportunity to have another brief resurrection. If that were the case, then Jesus lied when He said, “It is finished!” in John 19:30.
This is a big deal as Christians!
When the Lord reminded me of this, it was actually the difference between living with frustration over this issue or being confident that victory was on the way. I understand the grace and mercy side of God and how He forgives sin that we confess and then continues to love and accept us unconditionally.
However, if you’re anything like me, and you’ve been taught that you must continually put down that old sin nature by the power of Christ in order to gain victory, it can still be spiritually discouraging at times. Especially if you’ve experienced relentless spiritual attacks that have gone on for an extended period of time…like a few years.
Who is Doing This to Me?
If you’re experiencing attacks on your mind, emotions, appetites and desires that you know are wrong, I believe this will encourage you. I want to repeat what I said above about the fact that our old nature is not still alive.
You must either believe that God’s word is true, or it’s not, there’s no middle ground. It is absolute final authority and you can and should take it literally if it’s in context.
Romans 6:6 says that our “old man” (that is our Adamic sin nature, pre-salvation state) was crucified and done away with. It did not have another resurrection. Romans 6:7 says that “he has died” has been (past tense-not to come back) freed from sin. When Christ was buried and then resurrected, He did not only do that for us…He did is “as us”. His resurrection was “our resurrection”. Romans 6:11 says to “consider ourselves dead indeed to sin”.
Now if we are dead to sin but alive to God, that simply means in our resurrected, reborn spirit from Christ, it is impossible for us to sin. It’s not in our nature because we have the nature of Christ.
The problem is this. Paul said in Ephesians 6:12 that we do not fight against flesh and blood (ourselves or others) but our fight is against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness and against spiritual wickedness in heavenly places.
This is who is doing all this stuff to you! It IS NOT your old sin nature. When you don’t recognize the source, you’ll get into condemnation and introspection which opens the door to your enemy, then sin enters.
Every sin a Christian commits comes from believing a lie from the enemy.
The bible actually speaks of “familiar spirits” in the old testament that were involved in tormenting and oppressing people. Satan does not want you to think it’s him or his demons attacking you. So, if he can get you to agree with the lie that “it’s still you” and that it’s still your sin even though you know you were delivered from it, you’ll begin to wonder if Jesus really completed His work in your life.
Then you’ll question your identity in Christ, as well as “did God really say or do” such and such? It’s the same thing that tripped up Adam and Eve in the garden so long ago.
Please take this to heart, I believe it will help you as it did me. The more revelation we get out of God’s word, the more victory we can live in and the more intimate our relationship will become with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And there’s nothing more valuable than this in the days we’re living in.
Serving You Truth,
*I have intentionally gone overboard on word emphasis and embellishments in this post because of the importance of this information. And lastly, I intentionally did not capitalize satan’s name except at the beginning of a sentence because he does not deserve the recognition.
