Unholy Alliances

Posted: October 2, 2015 in Uncategorized

Have you ever been in a relationship with someone that was work related, personal, or otherwise, and you felt it was not right for you? In fact, you may have sensed early on that it was not only wrong for you, but could be potentially destructive for you or others acquainted with you or related to you if it continued. More than likely, that was an unholy alliance!

What is an unholy alliance? Webster’s defines unholy as: wicked, deserving of censure, or very unpleasant. An alliance is defined as: a bond or connection between states, parties, families, or individuals.

Unholy alliances most often come through relationships with people. Proverbs 12:26 (NKJV) says, “The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray.” Having the right kind of relationships is critically important in our lives and can either add to or take away from our spiritual and emotional health. They can and do even affect every area of our lives and those we love. And when the negative ones are allowed to go “unchecked” it can actually affect us for all eternity.

However, personal relationships with others are not the only way we are exposed to unholy alliances. These alliances can also be made—most often without people’s knowledge—through the many forms of media we have access to today which desensitize our consciences overtime and can ultimately neutralize our self-will. When this occurs, it can make us more susceptible than before to other destructive and evil influences which satan—the source of everything evil—will take full advantage of.

Different Types of Alliances

Whether or not you happen to be a Christian that is reading this post, you live in the same fallen world as I do. Unfortunately, you cannot help but be exposed to the same evil as the rest of us. However, there is hope of not only resisting it, but also winning over it if you know what to do and who to ask for help.

As I mentioned earlier, the source of all evil in this world comes from one place, satan. His strategy of trying to deceive and destroy mankind goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden, so he’s had a long time to work on his method of operation.

My personal conviction is that one of satan’s most insidious but extremely effective weapons he uses against us is fear. In Hebrews 2:15 (KJV) it says that one of the things Jesus did for us on the cross was to “…Deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” I believe that this verse implies that this particular fear could very well be the mother of all fears.

As I mentioned earlier, there are many ways that evil can come against us. It can also come through unforgiveness, strife, hatred, lying, cheating, rejection, betrayal, abuse, wrong relationships in different forms, and the list goes on. However, I would like to paint a bulls-eye on fear for the subject of this post.

How an Alliance is Formed

An alliance is typically formed between two parties who trust each other. The purpose of forming an alliance is so that either party can benefit from what the other has to offer. As such, each must be willing to yield himself to some degree to the other’s wishes or demands. In other words, each must have mutual agreement on the terms.

If you were to ask the average person if he or she would choose to form an alliance with fear, they would probably look at you like you were from another planet. No one in their right mind would choose to live in fear if they understood the consequences. In contrast, the spirit of fear is a bully, it’s controlling and manipulative and there is no benefit in being under its power.

The bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 that God did not give us a “spirit” of fear, but one (a Spirit) of power, love, and a sound mind [my emphasis]. This scripture lets us know immediately where, or who fear comes from and it is never from God.

When a person experiences fear coming against them, the best course of action is to use God’s word against it immediately! Why? Because if we don’t resist it, this is the entry point satan uses to bring more of his evil tactics to bear in our lives. The way he gets us to form an alliance with fear is by deceiving us into agreeing with him.

For example, I used to be terrified to talk to people about Jesus. The main reason is because satan would flash some image in my imagination of someone trying to hurt me if I witnessed to them. Or, he would drop some lie into my mind about what they would think of me (fear of man) if I did.

What happened in these instances? I came into agreement with satan’s lie, which in turn empowered him as the liar that he already is, (see John 8:44) so that he could have rule over me in that situation.

It does not matter what lie you fall for from satan or from a human being. Anytime you yield yourself to a lie, you empower that lie to have control over you to the same degree that you yield to it (see Romans 6:16). If that happens too many times, strongholds are established in your thinking and in your emotions, making it very difficult to get back to normal without a serious change in your thinking.

It’s never impossible with the power of the Holy Spirit to break down evil strongholds. But the truth remains, the more often you make alliances with an enemy, the more ground you’re going to lose in your life. I am speaking from experience here. When you finally set your mind to take back the territory you gave up to the enemy, he will not give it up without an intense fight.

How an Alliance is Broken

An alliance of fear can be established in our minds and emotions through direct assaults of satan coming against us mentally. This can also happen through relationships with human beings who are controlling, manipulative, and overbearing. These types of relationships, whether man or woman, can have a devastating effect in our lives that sometimes can last for decades.

Only Jesus Christ, through the person and power of the Holy Spirit can break the stronghold of an evil alliance such as this. He can and does come into our lives with a healing balm that restores life. When God gets involved in our healing, an individual can actually experience a quality of life that is better than it may have been before a traumatic event occurred.

You can break an evil alliance with fear, dread, anxiety, etc. the same way you formed it. But you have to change partners. You must be willing to admit that God is your only source of hope and deliverance, then yield to what He says in His word. He always has your best interest at heart, but you’ll have to be willing and committed to listening to and obeying His promptings.

If you’re someone that has lived in fear for months, years, or a lifetime, you can see that living a life of peace, tranquility, and security would be a much more enjoyable experience.

A Holy Spirit Alliance

If you’ve opened yourself up to things are evil, ask God to forgive you, cleanse your heart and mind and get under His protection. If you’re a Christian and are bound by fear, anxiety, dread of the future, present or otherwise, God loves you dearly and is waiting to help you.

Stay away from the “self-help” gurus and their methods for controlling fear. Fear is a demonic spirit that plays on and manipulates our minds and emotions which are the “fleshly part” of us. You cannot get victory over things of the flesh by using more fleshly tactics. (There is form of teaching of out there called Neuro-linguistic programming used to overcome emotional issues. That does not work long-term because it’s using fleshly tactics against an unseen spirit, the devil.)

Fear is a spirit and you can only get victory over it by using a spiritual weapon that is more powerful than what you are fighting against. And that would be God’s word.

1John 4:18 says that there is NO FEAR in love [God’s love]. It goes on to say that when we are mature in our knowledge of God’s love for us, every trace of fear can be eliminated. Not most of it, but every trace. See 1 John 4:18 in the Amplified translation. The more aware we become of and experience God’s love for us, the more fear loses its hold on us. That is what I will refer to here as coming into a Holy Spirit alliance.

If you don’t know Jesus, you can never successfully overcome anything on permanent basis that the enemy brings against you. It may look like it, but remember he is a master at hiding. That’s actually the definition of “occult.” It means to remain hidden. Only God’s Holy Spirit can expose him for what he is and eliminate him from your life as you continually yield to the Holy Spirit’s control.

Simply ask Jesus into your heart by saying, Father God, please forgive me for not believing in Your Son, Jesus Christ? I accept Him as my Savior and Lord and I ask You to come into my heart and make me Yours. That’s it! It’s not difficult. See John 3:16-17.

Contrary to religious tradition, God is not holding your sins against you. John 3:17 says God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved…period! Jesus took your sin on the cross, God has never held it against you (see 2 Cor. 5:19). The only reason a person won’t go to heaven is for rejecting Jesus (John 3:16-17).

If you’ve accepted Jesus as your Savior, I am so happy for you because you are now God’s child. John 1:12 says as many as receive Him, God gave them (you) the power to become the sons (or daughters) of God.

Welcome into God’s family.

Bless you,

Dennis

*Note: I chose not to capitalize any use of satan, except at the beginning of a sentence because he doesn’t merit the attention
